Red gram chutney/Kandi Pachadi

Red gram dal or Toor dal or Kandi pappu(telugu) contains high levels of protein and important amino acids, in combination with cereals, it makes a well- balanced food. Red gram is widely cultivated in India, is the largest producer and consumer of Red Gram dal or Pigeon pea. Split pulses in India is called dal. Fine paste made of this pulse is highly useful in bald patches. It should be applied regularly.
Pigeon pea is whole grain where as Red gram dal is split dal.


Red gram dal or Toor dal

Ingredients:
1/2 cup reg gram dal/toor dal
2 tsp black gram
2 dried red chilies
1/2 tsp cumin
2 pips garlic
1 medium size tamarind or lemon
salt to taste
1 tsp oil
For tempering or tadka
1 tsp oil
1/2 tsp black gram
1/2 tsp musterd
6-8 curry leaves
1/8 tsp turmaric
dash hing/asafetida


1. Heat oil in in a pan, add toor dal to it, fry this until it's colour turns red with nice aroma. Keep it a side, let it cool.
2. In the same pan add 2 tsp of black gram, red chilies, roast them for a min, then add cumin. let it cool down.
3. Grind these roasted ingredients with garlic,salt, adding 6-8 tsp of water make a coarse paste. Add lemon juice to it.
4. For tadka, heat oil add all the above said tadka ingredients in the same order, mix it to the paste.
5. Enjoy with steamed rice and ghee.
