Modak

Modak is a sweet dumpling popular in India and have a special importance in the worship of Hindu god Lord Ganesha and believed to be his favourite food. It is made up of freshly grated coconut and jaggery.

Preparation Time: 20-30 min
Cook Time: 15min
Cuisine: Indian

Ingredients

1cup - water
1cup - rice flour
1tsp - ghee/butter
A pinch - salt

For Stuffing

11/2 cup - Grated Coconut
3/4 cup - jaggery
1/2 tsp - cardamom powder

Method:

1. Boil the water in a vessel add ghee, then add rice flour to it, keep stirring continuously to prevent lumps forming from it,  turn off the heat and keep it a side.
2. Now in a pan heat jaggery, let it melt and then add coconut and cook it on medium heat for 5min, then add cardamom powder to it, mix well and let it cool down.
3. Then divide the coconut mixture into 12-15 equal portions.
4. Now take the rice dough and make lemon sized balls.
5. Greece your palm and make the balls into 3 inch diameter discs.
6. Now place the portion of the coconut mixture in the centre of the disc and form 8-10 pleats with fingers.
7. Gather them to form a bundle and seal the edges on to the top.
8. Then steam them in a cooker or steamer for 15 min.
9. Modak is ready for Ganesha and enjoy them later as pasadam.
